MANILA – The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has placed all local government units (LGUs) on heightened alert, mobilizing full-scale disaster preparedness measures as Typhoon “Fung-wong” — to be locally named “Uwan” — looms as potentially the strongest storm to hit the country this year.
“We cannot be complacent. The next 48 hours are crucial for preparedness. We urge everyone to stay informed, follow local advisories, and cooperate with authorities,” the DILG said in a statement Friday.
The agency issued its directive following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order for all government bodies to intensify preemptive disaster response operations in anticipation of the typhoon’s possible landfall in Northern or Central Luzon early next week.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Fung-wong may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility late Friday or early Saturday and could rapidly develop into a super typhoon as it moves over warm ocean waters. Once inside PAR, it will be the 21st tropical cyclone to affect the country in 2025.
DILG instructed local governments to activate their emergency operations centers, prepare heavy equipment and rescue units for clearing and relief operations, and coordinate closely with Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils to ensure quick mobilization once the typhoon strikes.
The agency also directed the strict enforcement of the no-sailing policy and the suspension of tourism and outdoor activities in vulnerable areas.
“All evacuation sites must be ready with adequate food, clean water, and electricity. The orderly management of evacuees must be prioritized,” it added.
Meteorologists warned that “Uwan” could unleash torrential rains and strong winds capable of triggering widespread flooding, landslides, and storm surges.
With several regions still reeling from Typhoon Tino’s destruction, disaster officials say the country’s readiness for back-to-back typhoons will be a critical test of government coordination and resilience./PN
