BACOLOD City – A labor organization has sought an increase in the minimum daily wage in Western Visayas.
The Philippine Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Workers’ Union – Trade Union Congress of the Philippines filed a petition on Jan. 23 yet, said Winnie Sancho, labor representative to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB).
The petitioning organization wanted an additional P150 on the daily wage of workers in commercial/industrial or nonagricultural establishments with more than 10 workers.
It also sought a P140 additional wage for those in agricultural plantations of more than 24 hectares and P130 for those in agricultural plantations of less than 24 hectares.
Members of the RTWPB will determine whether or not the petition was sufficient in form and substance, said Sancho, also the secretary-general of another labor group, General Alliance of Workers Association.
If the petition suffices, the RTWPB will schedule a series of public hearings, and after which identify whether or not the increase is necessary and how much the adjustment will be, Sancho said.
According to the petitioning organization, they sought the wage increase due to the increases in the prices of commodities brought about by the Tax Reform Acceleration for Inclusion Act.
Under the latest wage order for Western Visayas, which took effect on March 16, 2017, those in nonagricultural and industrial/commercial companies employing more than 10 workers shall get a P323.50 minimum daily pay.
Establishments employing less than 10 employees must provide their workers a minimum daily wage of P281.50./PN
