THE TOTAL corn production in Western Visayas was estimated at 201,859 metric tons (MT) in 2025 – 11.9 percent higher from 180,339 MT in 2024, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
This growth, PSA said, was accompanied by a nearly proportional expansion in regional area harvested, which grew by 11.8 percent recording 44,838 hectares from 40,118 hectares in the previous year.
By corn type, both white and yellow corn production recorded growth last year. White corn output rose by 25.3 percent, reaching 8,327 MT from 6,645 MT in 2024. For yellow corn, its production reached 193,532 MT, an 11.4 percent increase over the 173,694 MT harvested in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the harvested area for both corn types increased in 2025. The area for white corn expanded by 14.0 percent, rising to 3,220 hectares from 2,823 hectares in 2024. During the same period, the harvested area for yellow corn topped 37,295 hectares, or 11.6 percent higher from to 41,618 hectares in 2024.
Among the provinces in the region, Iloilo was the top contributor, accounting for 54.1 percent (109,166 MT) of the total production. It was followed by Capiz with a 40.4 percent share (81,551 MT) and Antique with 4.5 percent (9,077 MT). The remaining output was shared by Guimaras and Aklan, which accounted for 0.5 percent each.
Moreover, Iloilo drove growth in regional corn harvest area for 2025. The province provided the highest contribution at 7.4 percentage points, with its harvested area expanding by 13.6 percent to reach 24,710 hectares.
Other provinces also showed growth such as Capiz which contributed 2.6 percentage points, Antique (1.6 percentage points), and Guimaras (0.3 percentage points).
Aklan was the only province to record a decrease, with its harvested area declining by 7.7 percent, resulting in a negative 0.1 percentage point contribution./PN
