ILOILO — Health officials have launched a campaign in Iloilo aimed at encouraging men to seek medical attention early and consistently, addressing what authorities describe as a long-standing reluctance among men to prioritize their health.
The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas, in partnership with the local government unit of Oton, launched the “Lupit Gupit” (#KamiNaMen) advocacy campaign on June 16, combining men’s health promotion with road safety awareness in an effort to foster healthier and safer communities.
Health authorities said the initiative seeks to tackle critical health concerns that often remain overlooked because of stigma, lack of awareness, and limited discussions about men’s wellness.
The campaign promotes a holistic approach to men’s health by encouraging preventive healthcare, regular medical consultations, healthy lifestyle choices, and responsible behavior on the road.
During the launch, participants attended interactive discussions, workshops, and learning activities facilitated by the DOH Region 6’s Health Promotion and Communication Management Section. The sessions focused on improving health literacy while reinforcing road safety practices.
The initiative supports the Department of Health’s Eight-Point Action Agenda by translating national health priorities into community-based programs designed to help individuals make informed decisions about their health.
DOH-6 regional director Dr. Helen Tobias underscored the importance of ensuring that men actively access health services.
“Let us strengthen our collective efforts by actively promoting men’s health. It is crucial that health services are accessed early and consistently, ensuring that no man is left behind in our shared journey toward better health,” she emphasized.
Tobias said the campaign seeks to encourage men of all ages to openly discuss health concerns, seek timely medical advice, and adopt healthier lifestyles.
Officials said the initiative also aims to dispel misconceptions about men’s health, promote routine checkups, and create an environment where individuals can seek assistance without fear of judgment.
The campaign was spearheaded by Tobias and attended by health professionals, including Dr. Ramon Mateo Grecia Jr., Dentist III and Men’s Health Coordinator; Dr. Gem Laurie Borja, Medical Officer IV and Family Health and Nutrition Section head; and Dr. Fritzi Ann Suzette Jeroso-Dequito, head of the Health Promotion and Communication Management Section.
Municipal Administrator Diadema Vigo, representing Mayor Sofronio Fusin Jr., joined provincial and municipal health officials, road safety advocate Sandy Soltes, and other stakeholders in supporting the initiative.
