ILOILO City – West Visayas State University Medical Center (WVSUMC) in Jaro district temporarily stopped accepting patients in all of its clinical departments as well as services in its outpatient and diagnostic departments beginning Aug. 30 until further notice.
There has been an increase in the number of patients and healthcare workers infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), according to the hospital management.
As of yesterday, WVSUMC had 25 confirmed COVID infections, majority of which were doctors and nurses.
“The medical center is compelled to undergo sanitation and disinfection for the safety of its personnel and clients,” read part of WVSUMC’s advisory.
The WVSUMC emergency department, however, will remain open for patients needing acute, emergent treatment.
It will also provide the necessary urgent care until the patient is stable and ready for transfer to another hospital.
In a related development, the Western Visayas Sanitarium (WVS) announced that its COVID emergency room and admission services will resume accepting COVID-19-related cases.
“We would like to remind everyone that WVS only admits COVID-19 probable, suspect or confirmed patients with mild to moderate symptoms. Referrals and/or transfers should be properly coordinated,” WVS said in a statement.
However, effective Aug. 31 at 10:04 a.m., the WVS general or main emergency room services was temporarily suspended until further notice.
“This is in addition to the temporary suspension of the obgyne and surgical services as previously announced. This move for suspension is due to the current difficulties we are facing. We shall be urgently conducting risk assessment, screening and contact tracing of our staff due to exposure and symptoms,” WVS management said.
Furthermore, it added that this temporary suspension will give way for WVS to conduct thorough cleaning and disinfection of the area.
