ILOILO City – Foreign Affairs secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. will be recognized as one of the Central Philippine University’s (CPU) distinguished alumni today during its annual Alumni Homecoming and General Assembly.
Yasay, a trusted ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, is leading other alumni — mostly in government service — the university will honor for excelling in their fields.
The Foreign Affairs secretary finished his Bachelor of Arts degree, major in political science, in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Arriving today, he will be coming fresh from a diplomatic visit in Vietnam with the President from Sept. 28 to 29.
Yasay also made a public address during the annual United Nations general assembly in New York on Sept. 24.
“Welcoming these Centralian awardees back to their alma mater is an opportunity for fellowship and to give [them] recognition for their outstanding achievements,” said Dan Dorillo, president of the CPU Alumni Association, Inc. (CPUAAI).
Yasay and Duterte have been friends since they were still Law students, the former at the University of the Philippines Diliman and the latter at the San Beda College.
Appointed by then President Fidel Ramos, Yasay served as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1995 to 2000.
