PANDAN, Antique – A multinational youth organization looks to conserve mangrove forests and boost local aquaculture in a village in this town.

Alpha Team Organization (ATO), Inc. has recently launched the Mag-aba Mangrove Reforestation Project in the coastal barangay of Mag-aba.

“I think there is a high need for the conservation of our local natural resources,” said Crystal Santillan, president of the ATO, which was founded in this municipality.

That “the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park is within our region” and the “sizable number of marine protected areas” made them realize that “it is time for us, the youth, to conserve what remains [of our natural resources] for us and the next generations,” said Santillan.

Launched on Jan. 20, the project will span until October this year.

Just last month the organization organized a community capacity-building workshop involving residents, local officials and other sectors.

So far 20 youth volunteers and 30 community leaders are participating in the project.

“As a fisheries student and part of this community, I support this project because it will not only provide livelihood but also bode well for ecological conservation,” said Honey Rose Acquin, an ATO member and project volunteer.

Municipal Councilor Raymund Gumboc provides technical assistance to the project.

“This
is a good motivation for us to join hands to protect and conserve our mangroves and coral resources,” he said. “We in the Sangguniang Bayan will try to look for measures that will help sustain the project and strengthen our ordinances related to effective coastal resource management.”

The project has the support of the United Nations Environment Program’s Eco-Peace Leadership Center of Kangwon National University in South Korea and the Yuhan-Kimberly Ltd., a South Korean company that manufactures and sells sanitary products. (With reports from John Carl Alonsagay/PN)
