The Demafelis family weeps as the remains of Joanna Daniela Demafelis arrive at the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan, Iloilo from Metro Manila early morning on Saturday, Feb. 17. IAN PAUL CORDERO/PN

ILOILO City – Municipal councilors in Sara, Iloilo condemned the death of native Joanna Daniela Demafelis, the domestic worker found dead in a freezer in Kuwait.

What her killers did was “animalistic…a devil’s act,” the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Sarasaid in a resolution.

Autopsy showed that Demafelis was beaten to death before she was stuffed in a freezer in an abandoned apartment in Kuwait.

Authorities were searching for her employers – a Lebanese man and her Syrian wife – who allegedly had a hand in her death.

The SB and Vice Mayor Jesus Salcedo, the presiding officer, unanimously approved the resolution on Feb. 13.

Demafelis’ remains arrived at the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan town at around 6 a.m. yesterday.

The vice mayor and mother Ermelita, the Sara mayor, and sister JenedaSalcedo-Orendain, a SangguniangPanlalawigan member, accompanied the Demafelis family at the airport.

Vice Mayor Salcedo expressed condolences to the family and promised aid from the local government.

Rep. Raul Tupas of the 5th District, where Sara belongs, also went with the Demafelis family. He handed them an undisclosed amount of cash.

“We look forward to seeing justice served and the government helping the family,” said the congressman. “I hope [what happened to Demafelis] does not happen to other workers abroad.”

In addition, Tupas said he asked the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration to put up an “OFW center” in 5th District, where he claimed most overseas Filipino workers in Iloilo province come from. He did not provide figures.

“We hope the OWWA will consider this,” the congressman said./PN
