MANILA – San Miguel Beermen overhauled a double-digit first half deficit to score a 109-96 victory over Alaska Aces in the PBA Philippine Cup yesterday at the Batangas City Coliseum.

Chris Ross led the way with 24 points, Marcio Lassiter and Arwind Santos added 21 markers, while June Mar Fajardo contributed 17 points for Beermen, which moved up to a 7-2 win-loss slate.

Down by as much as 15 points in the second frame, Beermen got its shooting going in the third quarter behind Ross and Lassiter to snatch a 74-71 lead heading into the fourth.

Beermen continued its run at the onset of the fourth on outside shots by Yancy de Ocampo, Brian Heruela and Lassiter to build an 84-73 on a Chico Lanete basket.

Aces had its last push to come to within 83-87 on a 4-point play by Jvee Casio but Beermen countered with shots from Lassiter, Fajardo and Ross to increase the lead to its largest at 13 points.

On Friday evening, Magnolia Hotshots got back on the winning track following a 96-81 victory over GlobalPortBatang Pier at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

After trailing by double-digits in the opening half, Hotshots went on a huge run in the second half behind Rome dela Rosa, returning Paul Lee and Justin Melton to cruise to its largest lead at 99-76 in the fourth canto.

Dela Rosa finished with career-high 18 points while Melton and Ian Sangalang added 14 markers apiece for Hotshots (7-3). Kelly Nabong, meanwhile, finished with 21 points for Batang Pier (4-5).

“I reminded my players that we needed to have that playoff mentality,” Hotshots head coach ChitoVictolero said. “I’m happy they responded in the second half and we were able to snap our skid.”/PN
