MANILA – Marian Jade Capadocia and Clarice Patrimonio were set to face each other in the finals of 36th Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open women’s singles after beating their semifinals foes at the PCA court in Paco.

A native of San Jose, Antique, Capadocia beat Akiko de Guzman 6-1, 6-0 while Patrimonio eliminated Shaira Rivera in the tiebreak 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (5).

“It’s been quite long and I’m excited to play again in the (PCA Open) finals after two years,” said Capadocia. “(Patrimonio) is a great player and you have to prepare at all times against her.”

Capadocia dropped just one game to eliminate De Guzman while Patrimonio lost her focus after cruising past Rivera in the opening set but was able to recover her form in the third to prevent Rivera’s upset ax.

“I kind of forced the issue in the second set and lost my focus,” said Patrimonio. “Good thing I was able to settle down and regained my composure in the third and deciding set.”

In the quarterfinals, Capadocia scored 6-0, 6-0 over Sydney Ezra Enriquez while Patrimonio blazed through to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Jhastine Ballado.

Meanwhile, defending men’s champion Patrick John Tierro downed top seed Jeson Patrombon 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5 while John Bryan Otico defeated Leander Lazaro 6-1, 7-5 in the men’s singles semifinals.

A total of P500,000 in cash prizes are up for grabs for the winners./PN
