Players of Ceres Negros FC of the Philippines hug as they celebrate their decided win against Boeung Ket Angkor FC of Cambodia 9-0 in the AFC Cup group stage at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City on Tuesday night. CERES NEGROS FC

CERES Negros FC kicked off its campaign in the 2018 AFC Cup group stage with a 9-0 domination over Boeung Ket Angkor FC of Cambodia at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

Takumi Uesato, Bienvenido Marañon and Jose Elmer Porteria fired two goals each while Carlos de Murga and Manuel Ott added a conversion each for the Negros Occidental-based squad.

After missing its first few attempts on Tuesday night, the Busmen finally barged into the scoring column in the 15th minute on Uesato’s hit. It was followed by a header by Marañon and another close-range hit by Uesato for a 3-0 advantage.

The lead grew further 5-0 at the half with Marañon netting his second goal courtesy of a penalty kick in the 28th minute and Porteria hitting the back of the net three minutes later.

Ceres Negros netted another goal early in the second half following an own goal violation by Boeung Ket’s Sun Sovannarith. The Busmen went for the kill with a header from De Murga, a strike by Ott and another close-range shot by Porteria.

“To be honest I did not expect this outcome,” said Ceres Negros head coach Risto Vidakovic. “This is a good start for us as we aim to defend our ASEAN Zone championship.”

Ceres Negros will return to action on the 27th against Singapore’s Home United at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Both teams are currently tied on top of Group F with 3 points each.

Global Cebu FC, on the other hand, was not as fortunate as Ceres Negros.

It bowed to FLC Thanh Hoa of Vietnam 0-1 on Pape Omar Faye’s 74th minute goal in the match held at My Dinh Stadium in Vietnam./PN
