KALIBO, Aklan – The development of the Kalibo International Airport (KIA) is a priority, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

Provincial Administrator Selwyn Ibaretta, vice chairperson of the Provincial Site Acquisition Committee, said hundreds of affected landowners attended a multi-sectoral consultation from Nov. 13 to Nov. 17 at the Aklan Trade Hall in the provincial capitol.

Only those who were given invitation letters were allowed to attend the dialogue, said Ibaretta, addressing some tenants who felt that they were “harassed” for not being able to join the affair.

DOTr personnel discussed with the landowners how they will be compensated upon the start of land acquisitions for KIA’s development.

KIA’s development, which will include the construction of a new apron and terminal, will affect some areas in three Kalibo villages – Nalook, Tigayon and Estancia – and Barangay Puis in New Washington.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Management Staff has reminded the DOTr to be “just in all their actions.”

Margarita Yu, assistant secretary for Office of the Special Assistant of the Presidential Management Staff, said they received complaints from farmers’ associations that the DOTr has yet to give them the payment for previous land acquisitions.

“The farmers alleged that an amount of P965,400 has not yet been fully paid,” said Yu.

KIA currently caters to both domestic flights (to and from Manila, Cebu, Pampanga, and Davao) and international flights (to and from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei in Taiwan, Busan in South Korea, and 11 provinces in China).

Air Seoul will be the first South Korean airline to fly from Incheon International Airport in Seoul to KIA on Dec. 22.

KIA has earned On Time Performance Star Ratings that was also given to the Iloilo International Airport by the Official Aviation Guide for 2016-2017./PN
