MANILA – As if to cast doubt on the victory of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, Meralco Bolts head coach Norman Black criticized the officiating of Game 7 of the PBA Governors’ Cup finals on Friday night.

How the do-or-die game was “governed,” especially at the latter part, has dismayed Black, he told an interview after their 96-101 defeat to Kings at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

“First of all, congratulations to Ginebra and coach Tim (Cone). Other than that, I don’t really have any comment,” Black said. “I wasn’t very happy with the way the game was governed.”

“I’d just leave it at that, OK? I don’t wanna give the commissioner any money,” he said, referring to the possible fine PBA commissioner Andres Narvasa may impose on him for criticizing the officiating through the press.

Black’s bone of contention was the non-call by referees on the backcourt violation of Kings’ import Justin Brownlee when his team was trailing 96-100 with under a minute left in the match.

Meralco assistant coach Luigi Trillo, meanwhile, said Black was fuming with the inconsistent calls made by referees that could have changed the completion of the game.

“Obviously, there were calls that were tough down the stretch,” Trillo said. “They called certain backings. We thought there was a backing. It’s hard to play a knockout game chasing from behind.”

“The momentum came too late, but it is what it is,” he added. “Sometimes you get the breaks, you get a backing call over here, maybe a touch foul here, but you have to play on.”/PN
