MANILA – Negrense boxer “King” Arthur Villanueva hopes to extend his winning streak when he battles the Mexican Luis Nery on Nov. 5 at the Gasmart Stadium in Tijuana, Mexico.
It will be the Bago City, Negros Occidental native’s second fight after beating fellow Filipino Ritchie Mepranum with a fourth-round stoppage in September in Cebu.
Villanueva – the reigning WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion – said he has maintained his aggressiveness heading into the match even though the bout was reduced to nontitle.
“This should be a title fight but the WBO did not approve it,” Villanueva said. “Nevertheless, I am still very much ready. I know Luis (Nery) is a strong fighter, so I am working on my stamina.”
His trainer, Edito Villamor, said he likes what he sees in Villanueva in their training and is confident the Negrense boxer can pull off an upset against the world champion.
“Nery is a great champion. This is an exciting fight,” Villamor said. “Both boxers want to engage but I keep on reminding Arthur (Villanueva) to be aggressive since we will be fighting [amid] a hostile crowd.”
Villanueva is flashing a 31-2-0 win-loss-draw record, including 17 stoppage victories, while Nery will put his unblemished 24-0-0 slate, with 18 victories by way of stoppages, at stake./PN
