MANILA – Senators Nancy Binay and Grace Poe are against the planned re-imposition of the death penalty bill.

“I am against the death penalty,” Binay said echoing the stand of her father, former vice president Jejomar Binay, on the possible death penalty revival.

“I am pro-life,” she told Panay News on Tuesday.

At the 2016 presidential debate in Cagayan de Oro, the Binay patriarch said that only God can take life.

Hindi po ako naniniwala sa death penalty. Trabaho ng Diyos ‘yan. Hindi dapat natin gawin ‘yan,” he said.

Poe, for her part, said there is a need to reform the country’s judicial and law enforcement branches first “before we should entertain the possibility of returning the death penalty.”

The senator also said the Senate can, however, start the debate on heinous crimes.

Other senators who are against the proposal are senators Bam Aquino, Franklin Drilon, Francis Escudero, Richard Gordon, Risa Hontiveros, Leila de Lima, Francis Pangilinan, Ralph Recto, and Antonio Trillanes IV.

Those who expressed openness include senators Sonny Angara, JV Ejercito, Sherwin Gatchalian, Vicente Sotto III, and Joel Villanueva./PN
