JORDAN, Guimaras – The province of Guimaras steadily improved over the years as evident in the way of life of majority of Guimarasnons.
Gov. Samuel Gumarin highlighted the gains of his administration in his 2016 State of the Province Address (SOPA) at the provincial capitol.
These were not possible without the help of his constituents, his colleagues in governance, and the private sector, he stressed.
“In three years, we progressively reengineered our system by reintegrating the principles of good governance, full public accountability and support to the international pact of Sustainable Development Goals,” said Gumarin, who is now serving his second term.
The economic improvement can be seen in the increase of the province’s income.
“In 2015, the province had a total gross income of P514.2 million, an almost 21 percent increase from the 2014 total gross income of P426.8 million,” he said, and this was derived from the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) and local taxes.
Gumarin said the money was used to fund programs and projects geared towards the province’s goal of becoming the agri-tourism capital of Western Visayas.
The province was also successful in its poverty alleviation projects as evident in the decline in poverty incidence in 2015, he stressed.
Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed poverty incidence in the island-province at 20.8 percent in 2015, 16.4 percent lower than the 37.2 percent poverty incidence in 2012.
Now, said Gumarin, a Guimarasnon family of five members needs a monthly income of P6,634 to meet their basic needs and P9,501 to stay out of poverty.
The 2015 poverty incidence was the lowest compared to 2006, 2009 and 2012 data, he added. (PNA)
