BACOLOD City – Twelve Christian fire fighters of the Firefighters for Christ International from the United States and England spent five days here to train local firemen, rescue groups and environmental workers from all over the Negros Island Region.

More than 100 participants went through the rigors of swift water rescue, wildland fire fighting and auto extrication trainings.

The trainings were held at a hotel. Class demonstration to actualize the training was held at the parking area of the hotel.

The participants were from the following:

* Bureau of Fire Protection – Negros Island Region (BFP-NIR)

* rescue groups from local government units

* environment workers from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Provincial Environment Management Office, and

* Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council.

BFP-NIR acting regional director Fred Trajeras Jr. said the participants would echo to their peers that they learned.

Provincial Disaster Management Program chief Dr. Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian said the training will be replicated in various local government units (LGUs).

LGUs that participated in the training were Cadiz City, La Carlota City, La Castellana, Hinoba-an and Calatrava.

According to Trajeras, after the training on vehicular extrication, one of the rescue groups in Cadiz City was able to perform what they learned when a vehicular accident happened.

Caelian said Negros Occidental was chosen as training beneficiary because it has threats from wildland forest fires.

He also noted the increasing number of vehicular accidents in the province and the frequent flooding.

Firefighters for Christ International president John White revealed that BFP-NIR regional director Rico Kwan Tiu invited them to come over when Tiu also attended one of their trainings in Quezon City.

The group also donated four sets of swift water rescue equipment, four sets of auto-extrication equipment and wildland forest fire fighting tools to the province. (PIA-Negros Occidental/PN)
