ILOILO City – From 25, the number of youth gangs that the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) identified rose to 28, and most of these were in the district of La Paz, police said.
There were 14 in La Paz, said Senior Inspector Marie Faith Superio of ICPO’s Women and Children’s Protection Desk, and this could be because of the many schools operating in the district.
Superio also said the singular focus of the police in the campaign against illegal drugs may have contributed to the growth of youth gangs because these were not given much attention.
Gang-related violence has been bugging the city in recent months. The ICPO said most of the members of the gangs were minors.
The city police feared gang violence could erupt during the Dinagyang festivities.
The gangs that the ICPO identified were spread out in five districts – City Proper, La Paz and Lapuz, Mandurriao, Molo./PN
