BACOLOD City – Streets in the city must be well-lighted to ward off untoward incidents, especially against women.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod committees on women and gender, and family and childcare are requesting the City Engineer’s Office to install additional streetlights along Lacson Street in Barangay Mandalagan, particularly the area where the overpass is situated.

An 18-year-old woman who works in a fast food chain at Robinsons Place was harassed when she was on her way home passing through the overpass around 10 p.m. on Feb. 5, a Police Station 3 report showed.

The woman – whose name was withheld – said two men grabbed her hand and tried to undress her.

She was able to flee by kicking the men, police said.

According to the woman, she passes through the overpass every time she gets off from work. The incident was a first time, she added.

Councilor Cindy Rojas said traffic is heavy in the area that is why many people are opting to use the overpass.

Rojas added that well-lighted streets will help secure pedestrians.

Rojas said she will request intensified police visibility in the area to prevent the incident from happening again.

Councilor Em Ang affirmed Rojas’ sentiments. She added that Robinsons Place must also install CCTV cameras at the overpass./PN
