BACOLOD City – The Negros Occidental provincial government has allocated P2 million in additional crop insurance fund that will benefit almost 2,400 enrolled farmers in the province.

Fourth District Board Member Victor Javellana, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) committee on agriculture, said in a report Thursday it was timely for the province to allocate more crop insurance fund as many rice farmers were starting to plant their crops.

The SP granted Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. the authority to sign an agreement with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) for the utilization of additional fund.

The province, through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), has partnered with PCIC for the implementation of the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program (NFUCIP) which started in 2011.

“Many farms, especially those planted with rice in the province, are vulnerable to possible adverse effects of climate change thus, insurance program could really benefit those who will be affected,” Javellana said.

OPA records showed the P2-million allocation was on top of about P7.5 million in available balance at the PCIC.

All in all, the total available fund of P9.5 million can cover almost 12,000 farmers of rice, corn and other high value crops.

Under NFUCIP, claims are provided to enrolled and insured farmers. They may avail themselves of the P17,000 claims per hectare of farms damaged and affected by calamity.

The enrollment premium per cropping season is P840. Of which, only P340 is the counterpart of the farmer-enrollees while the remaining P500 is shouldered by the provincial government as loan.

Dina Genzola, senior agriculturist of OPA, said enrollees should apply for insurance before planting.

Farms covered by the program are those planted for not less than 25 days, she noted. (PNA)
