BORACAY – “Successful” security operations maintained peace and order during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) ministerial meetings in the island, according to the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).

Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson, attributed this to the efforts put in place by law enforcement and government agencies.

The world-famous island resort hosted the 23rd Meeting of the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights from Feb. 13 to 15 and the Asean Ministerial Meeting Retreat from Feb. 19 to 21.

Agency officials and law enforcers including Gorero gathered on Feb. 22 for a final coordinating conference and assessment.

Starting Tuesday next week (Feb. 28), security personnel will be deployed for the Asean meetings in Iloilo City, Gorero said.

Task Group Site Iloilo City will tap officers from nearby provincial police offices.

The capital city will host the following:

* 22nd SOCA Meeting and 17th Asean Socio-cultural Community Council Meeting, March 6 to 9

* Asean Military Operations Informal Meeting, ASEAN Military Intelligence Informal Meeting and Asean Chiefs of Defense Forces Informal Meeting, March 6 to 10

* 3rd Asean-OECD Good Regulatory Practice Network Meeting, March 14 to 15

Emergency response teams including ambulances and fire trucks will be detailed at the venues.

During the Boracay leg, around 3,000 police officers, soldiers, coastguards, Navy officers, and volunteers were deployed to the venues, airports, hotels, ports, and tour routes.

Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, regional police chief, thanked island stakeholders and the local governments of Aklan province and Malay town for their support. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
