BACOLOD City – As a form of protest, Bishop Monsignor Patricio Buzon of the Diocese of Bacolod encouraged the faithful to wear red tomorrow.

“Red Wednesday” is a part of the 18-day campaign of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) to promote religious freedom and respect for human life.

Last year, religious persecution claimed the lives of more than 90,000 Christians around the world, according to Buzon.

He said the number is “alarming” and thus the faithful must unite to put an end to the killings.

As part of the Red Wednesday, a procession will be held around the public plaza at 5:30 p.m. to be followed by a concelebrated mass.

There will also be a candl-lighting activity.

Buzon also encouraged non-Catholics to join the campaign.

Moreover, the bishop criticized the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte for its “policy” of destabilizing groups and institutions that express opposition on the government.

Buzon said the groups and institutions “experienced harassments from the government.”

Buzon reiterated that the Catholic Church is very vocal in opposing any policy against human rights.

He stressed that the Church will “stand in the way of the government if it moves toward dictatorship.”

The Diocese of Bacolod will also join the celebration of the International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10./PN
