ILOILO City – A high school student died while 16 others were injured in a four-vehicle accident yesterday in Barangay Tigbauan Road, Cabatuan, Iloilo.
Mark John Malfarte, 16, of Barangay Pagotpot, Cabatuan and a Grade 9 student of Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School died at the Ramon Tabiana Memorial District Hospital.
Those injured were also taken to the same hospital located in Barangay Pungtod, Cabatuan.
The accident happened around 7:30 a.m., according to Chief Inspector Engelbert Banquillo, Cabatuan police chief. It involved a cargo truck loaded with sand and gravel, a motorcycle, a tricycle, and a passenger jeepney.

* Jecyl Continente, 29
* Sunshine Mailla, 31
* Merlinda Ramos, 75; and
* John Arvie Gualin, 21.
The cargo truck was headed to Iloilo City and driven by Rafael Palec, 46, of Barangay Magbato, Lambunao, Iloilo.
Palec lost control of the truck upon reaching a hilly area of Barangay Tigbauan Road and hit the motorcycle driven by Jihu Sta Romana, 36.
Then the truck hit the tricycle driven by Gemmar Aguero, 36, and the Janiuay-Iloilo passenger jeepney, said Banquillo.
Palec was detained at the Cabatuan police station. He told investigators the truck lost its break.
Palec faces a charge for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple frustrated homicide./PN
