ILOILO City – The two-day highlights of the 2018 Dinagyang Festival kicks off today with 10 contingents vying for top honors in the Kasadyahan regional festival competition.
The contest starts at 8 a.m. after a 6 a.m. mass at the San Jose de Placer Church, Plaza Libertad.
Kasadyahan started as out as mardi gras with participation from city schools, universities and private organizations a few years after the birth of Dinagyang.
Through the years, it evolved into a showcase of various municipal-based festivals in Western Visayas.
Today’s competing fests are from the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras, Antique, and Negros Occidental.
There are five judging areas – Freedom Grandstand, Iloilo provincial capitol, corner Mabini-Delgado streets, corner Quezon-Ledesma streets, and Maria Clara area.
The participating festivals are the following:
* Pintaflores – San Carlos City, Negros Occidental
* Kaing – Leon, Iloilo
* Haw-as – Dumangas, Iloilo
* Mangunguma – San Lorenzo, Guimaras
* Pantat – Zarraga, Iloilo
* Tultugan – Maasin, Iloilo
* Tinabu-ay – Murcia, Negros Occidental
* Manggahan – Nueva Valencia, Guimaras
* Salakayan – Miag-ao, Iloilo
* Banigan – Libertad, Antique
As the contingents move from one judging area to the next, there would be street-dancing to the original Dinagyang dance tune “Hala Bira, Iloilo!”
Winners would be announced tomorrow night at the Freedom Grandstand.
The champion festival will take home P200,000 prize; 1st runner-up, P175,000; 2nd runner-up, P150,000; 3rd runner-up, P125,000; and 4th runner-up, P100,000.
A consolation prize of P40,000 would be given to each non-winning festivals.
The performers would be judged based on the following criteria:
* choreography (suitability of the dance movements to the concept) – 20 percent
* performance (showmanship, mastery, unity) – 30 percent
* theme/concept (adherence to the cultural theme of the presentation) – 15 percent
* production design – 20 percent (10 percent for costume and 10 percent for props )
* music – 15 percent/PN
