ILOILO – Some 10,000 tree seedlings would be planted in three barangays of Passi City on Sept. 28, the 20th Pista sa Kakahuyan of the provincial government.
These barangays are Alimono, Jaguimitan and Salngan, according to Mitzi Peñaflorida, senior environmental management specialist of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO).
The tree seedlings – which include narra, jackfruit, cacao, kamagong, mahogany, Palawan cherry, among others – would be planted on either side of the road traversing the three barangays.
Peñaflorida said the tree planting would cover
an estimated 11.5 kilometers of road.
The three barangays chosen for the activity are near the biggest Philippine
Rural Development Project (PRDP)-funded road project in the Visayas – the
Imbang Grande-Tagubong-Gemumua Agahon-Agtabo farm-to-market road.
The PRDP road project is some 28 kilometers and serves 4,080 households in the villages of Imbang Grande, Talongonan, Jaguimitan, Salngan, Alimono, Magdungao, Tagubong, Agtabo, Dalicanan, and Gemumua Agahon.
Saturday’s tree planting would have an estimated 1,000 participants from the provincial government, schools, government agencies, and volunteers.
The tree planting was originally scheduled on June 22 in Barangay Pangilihan, Janiuay town but was postponed due to inclement weather.
The 20th Pista sa Kakahuyan tree planting is part of then governor Arthur Defensor Sr.’s regreening program called Action for Re-greening and Transformation for Climate Change Adaptation (Art for CCA).
