BACOLOD City – The Filipino-Chinese community in this capital city is gearing up for the upcoming celebration of the Lunar New Year.
This year’s celebration marks the 13th anniversary on the Bacolaodiat Festival – a word play of “Baco” for Bacolod and “Lao Diat” for the Fookien word that means celebration.
The festival, which will be from Feb. 15 to 18, will highlight the Foo Dogs as symbols of loyalty and protection.
The Feb. 15 to 17 activities will be held on the South Capitol Road and Lacson Tourism Strip while the Feb. 17 to 18 activities at the Bacolod City Government Center.
A festival activity will also be held at the Yuan Thong Temple on Jan. 15.
The Lunar New Year’s Day is the first day of the year based on the lunar calendar. Among the countries celebrating the Lunar New Year are China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, and Burma.
The four-day celebration in the city will kick-start with the Dazzling Grande Parade, which will be joined by Tsinoys in their traditional Chinese costumes along with the 12 zodiac floats, city officials, and students of local Chinese schools.
A fireworks display accompanied by the official Bacolaodiat music – Symphony of Lights and Sparks – will be held each night of the festival.
The Bacolaodiat Imperial Village will feature Asian arts and crafts like calligraphies, a wishing tree and palm reading, among others.
The Chopsticks Alley will cater Chinese food and will stage Chinese food cooking demos.
Cultural shows from various Chinese schools, a lantern-making contest and a lantern street dance competition will also be held.
Bacolaodiat Festival is seen to veer away bad luck and strengthen the Filipino-Chinese relationship in Bacolod City, the organizers said./PN
