BACOLOD City – Fifteen of the 28 policemen relieved from their posts these past two months and given new assignments by the Police Regional Office 18 (PRO-18) did not report to their new areas.
Because of this, the cops risk being declared AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave), said Chief Superintendent Renato Gumban, Negros Island Region director.
If they continue with their unauthorized absences, they further risk dismissal from the police service, he added.
“Ang latest nga gin-relieve nga pakadto sa ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao), may 15 nga wala naka-report until now. AWOL ‘yan,” Gumban confirmed.
Gumban did not identify the police officers but said some of them reasoned out they have court cases to attend to in the Negros Island Region.
That’s not a valid excuse, said the regional police director.
If they have court duties, their new unit would certainly allow them to attend these, said Gumban.
“Hatagan ka ng pamasahe, tanan-tanan i-shoulder ina sang unit mo kun may court duty ka,” Gumban said.
Gumban recently said that before Christmas Day, three more Negros Island Region police officers allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade will be relieved.
Gumban withheld their names but said one is a police commissioned officer while the other two are police noncommissioned officers.
They will all be transferred to the Police Regional Office (PRO) Cordillera, the PRO-18 director disclosed.
The three officers will raise to 31 the number of Negros Island officers relieved over alleged involvement in drugs since the Philippine National Police (PNP) started an intensified antidrug campaign in July.
Just this November, 21 officers were relieved: seven effective Nov. 16 and 14 effective Nov. 28.
Seven officers were relieved for the same reason effective Oct. 26, including — ironically — one distinguished in drug enforcement./PN
