BORACAY ā€“ At least 17 houses and establishments in this world-famous island were given notices of violation for their nonobservance of the local sanitation code.

Malay government administrative assistant Rowan Aguirre on Sunday said the drainage of at least 17 houses and establishments in Sitio Bulabog broke the sanitation code.

ā€œMeron kaming cinite na mga violation sa illegal connection sa drainage. Mostly ano ito, violation ng sanitation code, so around 17 ā€“ mga residential ‘to tsaka establishment,ā€ Aguirre said.

The local government has formed Task Force Bulabog to address the concern. More notices are expected to be served in the coming days.

These measures came after President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to shut down Boracay, which he described as a ā€œcesspool.ā€

The President said he will close the island resort if its environmental problems remain unfixed within six months.

Local resort and hotel owners expressed concern over Duterteā€™s remarks but they said they are willing to work with the government to address the islandā€™s problems. (With a report from GMA News/PN)
