MANILA – At least 17 people were reported dead after tropical depression “Maring” pounded large swaths of Luzon with heavy rains and gusty winds last week, the disaster monitoring agency said on Sunday.
Packing winds of 60 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 100 kph, “Maring” made landfall over Quezon province last Tuesday before passing by Metro Manila and plowing through Laguna, Rizal, Bataan, and Zambales.
“Mayroon tayong reported na 17 fatalities dahil dito. Lima rito ang nakumpirma na ng DILG; 12 pa ang currently bina-validate ng ating Department of the Interior and Local Government,” said Mina Marasigan of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
(We have 17 fatalities because of this. Fiver were confirmed by the DILG while the remaining 12 were still being validated.)
Earlier media reports said among the fatalities were two teenaged brothers whose house was buried in a landslide in Rizal; a 15-year-old boy who drowned in floodwaters in Laguna; and a baby whose home was pinned by a collapsed wall.
Authorities were still searching for nine people reported missing during the tropical depression’s onslaught, Marasigan told radio dzMM.
“Maring” damaged 1,822 houses and left P290.8 million worth of damage to agriculture and infrastructure, the official added.
Meanwhile, moderate to light rains will dampen Visayas and Mindanao islands until Tuesday while thunderstorms are expected in Metro Manila and the rest of the country, the state weather bureau Pagasa said in its weekly bulletin. (ABS-CBN News)
