MANILA – The Bureau of Customs seized 18 brand-new luxury cars worth more than P107 million at the Manila International Container Port.
Customs commissioner Isidro Lapeña led yesterday the inspection of the luxury vehicles that arrived in the Philippines between Oct. 13 and 19 from Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates and the United States.
The shipments included 12 Toyota Land Cruisers, three Range Rovers, two Chevrolet Camaros, and a McLaren, all of current models, he noted.
The cars were seized for being undervalued and lacking documents required by the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
The declared value of the shipment was P32.8 million – 49 percent lower than their total market value of P107.9 million – a document provided by Customs showed.
The consignee, Gamma Gray Marketing, failed to provide the Revenue bureau’s Authority to Release Imported Goods, or ATRIG, said Lapeña.
The ATRIG allows the release of imported goods from Customs custody upon payment of rightful duties and taxes or proof of exemption from payment thereof.
Gamma Gray Marketing’s office was on Room 501, 5th floor, Champ Building, Bonifacio Drive, Anda Circle, Port Area, Manila.
Lapeña also ordered an investigation into the Customs broker and consignee’s permit to import luxury cars to determine liability and possible violation of Revenue Regulation numbers 2-2016 and 25-2003, and Sections 1400 of Republic Act 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act of 2016.
“This is a blatant disregard of Customs rules on importation. I am sure traders know what is required when bringing luxury vehicles into the country,” said Lapeña. “I appeal to all importers not to disregard Customs laws or else you will face the consequences of your malpractice.”
Atty. Ruby Alameda, the port’s district collector, said all shipments were processed by Customs broker Roy Lasdoce and the vehicles were examined at the International Container Terminal Services, Inc. container yard on Oct. 23. (PNA)
