ILOILO City – Two senior citizens in Banate, Iloilo were arrested for allegedly collecting bets for the illegal numbers game “bookies.”
The 60-year-old Larry Vendeflor and the 67-year-old Joey Rosana were detained in the municipal police station.
Both were residents of Barangay Poblacion, Banate.
Police arrested them in the same village around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
Gambling paraphernalia and P1,675 worth of bets were seized from the illegal gambling suspects, police said.
Sources from the gaming industry said bookies attracts old-time bet takers, better known as coridores, who demand 30-percent commission.
Senior Superintendent Harold Tuzon, provincial police director, had said their operations against illegal numbers games will continue.
General Manager Alexander Balutan of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, which operates the anti-illegal gambling game Small Town Lottery, had also warned those engaged in illegal gambling operations to stop or face arrest.
“To all illegal gambling operators, your minions and protectors, your days are numbered. You can run but you cannot hide. Go legal or else we will arrest you and file appropriate charges against you,” Balutan said./PN
