MANILA – The House of Representatives Committee on Justice is set to close today its inquiry on the impeachment complaint filed against Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Two psychiatrists who have evaluated Sereno when she applied for the chief justice position were invited to today’s session, said Rep. Reynaldo Umali, committee chairman.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is also expected to disclose the results of its preliminary investigation into alleged discrepancies in Sereno’s tax records related to her fees as a government lawyer, Umali said.

“We will close the inquiry on Tuesday, then we will be back on March 6 to vote for the probable cause of impeachment, and on March 13 for the approval of the committee report with the Articles of Impeachment,” said the congressman from the 2nd District of Oriental Mindoro.

“A week after that, the impeachment complaint will be subjected to plenary vote before we transmit it to the Senate Impeachment Court if ever a probable cause is found,” he added.

Umali believes there is enough probable cause to impeach Sereno.

Ganoon po ang nakikita ko kasi maraming na-establish kami during the hearing at marami nang nalinawan doon sa issues,” Umali said in an interview with dzMM radio.

Lawyer Lorenzo “Larry” Gadon filed the complaint against the chief justice.

At ngayon hindi na nila tinitingnan iyong issue being hearsay dahil walong justices po iyong humarap na masasakit po ang sinabi patungkol po kay chief justice,” Umali added.

Sereno was accused of culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, corruption, and other high crimes./PN
