ILOILO City – The two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels killed in an encounter with government troops in Barangay Jebaca, Maayon, Capiz on Feb. 24 were new recruits, according to the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID).

The rebels were Ian Borres, 23, and relative Lorendo Borres, 48. Both were residents of Barangay Jebaca and under the command of NPA leader Romulo Gangoso alias Ka Regan operating in Capiz, said Lieutenant Colonel Ericson Rosana, 3ID spokesperson.

“They were in the order of battle of the 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB) and were newly recruited,” added Rosana.

A Scout Platoon of the 61IB had a chance encounter with the group of t he Borreses around 3:40 p.m. Friday last week. The firefight lasted for some 30 minutes.

After the rebels withdrew, government troops recovered in the area two 12-gauge shotguns and two grenades.

None from the Scout Platoon was wounded.

Following the encounter, the 3ID deployed reinforcements from the 301st Infantry Brigade and 61IB to Barangay Jebaca.

Just this Feb. 7, rebels detonated an improvised explosive device in Barangay Tacayan, Tapaz, Capiz, killing an Army corporal and wounding two others.

It was an ambush. Right after the explosion, an estimated 40 NPA cadres fired their guns at some 20 soldiers responding to reports that armed men were in the hinterland village.

The 29-year-old Corporal Ricky Bill Farinas of Dumarao, Capiz was killed in action. His two wounded companions were Sergeant William Viaro and Private First Class Donald Lisbo. They were all members of the 61IB./PN
