BACOLOD City – A suspension of permits to carry firearms outside of residence has been set here.
Lieutenant Colonel Ariel Pico, spokesperson of Bacolod City Police Office, said they have started enforcing the gun ban day after the opening of the 40th MassKara Festival on Monday.
“This security measures will be implemented in the entire city, not just in the festival sites,” Pico stressed.
Based on the order of the Philippine National Police (PNP) main headquarters, all “permits to carry” are suspended in Bacolod from 8 a.m. on Oct. 8 to 8 a.m. on Oct. 27.
During the period, only members of the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines and other law enforcement agencies performing official duties and in agency-prescribed uniforms will be allowed to carry guns.
According to Pico, they requested the enforcement of the gun ban to support the police’s aim of zero major crime incidents during the festivities.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia himself has pushed for the enforcement of a total gun ban to ensure the safety and security of revelers during the festival.
“The safety of the people will be the highest consideration,” the mayor said.
Earlier though, Councilor Al Victor Espino, chairman of the City Council committee on police matters, authored a resolution opposing the gun ban, saying it was unnecessary during the MassKara Festival it Espino cited that the gun ban does not diminish the actual threat or imminent danger on the life of a person permitted by law to carry firearms, and is not sufficient reason or cause for the deprivation of the privilege.
This year, the main festival sites still include the Bacolod Public Plaza, Bacolod Government Center, and the Tourism Strip on Lacson Street.
The festival highlights will start on Oct. 24 and 25, showcasing the Electric MassKara parades.
The final two days will feature the much-anticipated MassKara Street and Arena Dance competitions. (With PNA/PN)
