ILOILO City – A total of 250 students from different universities and secondary schools participated in the recently-concluded 20-day summer job under the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) of the city government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Created under Republic Act (RA) 7323 or The Special Program for Employment of Students Act, as amended by RA 9547 and RA 10917, SPES is an employment bridging program during summer or Christmas vacation that aims to augment the family’s income of poor but deserving students, out-of-school youth (OSY) or dependents of displaced workers who intend to finish their education.
This year, the recipients of the program received a remuneration of P298.50 per day for their services. Sixty percent of the compensation came from local government units while 40 percent was provided by DOLE.
Nestor Sampiano Jr., a Civil Engineering student from the Western Institute of Technology, on the other hand, told Panay News he enjoyed his job at the City Engineer’s Office because it allowed him to apply the knowledge he learned from school.
“The experience parang training for the real world, kasi sa site we faced the real deal. Iba kasi yung sa school lang kag lain man ang application or hands-on experience,” he said.
Based on the records of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO), most of this year’s participants were from the Iloilo Science and Technology University and the University of Iloilo-PHINMA.
According to “Annie”, an Information Technology student of Interface Computer College who was fielded in a call center company, her experience in the summer job helped her discover her strengths.
“Ok siya kay ang mga ability ko kag mga skill dira ko siya nabal-an and kung paano siya gamiton. Kag didto ko nabal-an kung paano kita mag-communicate sa iban,” she said.
