BACOLOD City – A total of 27 barangays in Negros Occidental have been declared drug-free by the Philippine National Police (PNP) as of December this year.
The latest are two Cadiz City villages – Dr. V.F. Gustilo and Celestino Villacin.
Barangays are declared drug-cleared with the approval of the local chief executive and the police.
Ten barangays in Sipalay City were previously declared drug-free. These were barangays 1, 2, 3, 4, Cabadiangan, Camindangan, Cayhagan, Mambaroto, Manlucahoc, and Nauhang.
There were 10 in La Carlota City – Ara-al, Ayungon, Balabag, Cubay, Haguimit, La Granja, Nagasi, RSB, San Miguel, and Yubo.
In Salvador Benedicto town, there were five – Pinoyawan, Bago, Bagong Silang, Kumaliskis, and Pandanon.
According to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the barangays declared drug-free complied with the requirements as assessed by the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council and the police, with the validation of the mayor.
Under the new classification, a barangay is considered seriously-affected if there is even just one clandestine drug laboratory or marijuana plantation in the community and that the identified pushers and users are more than 20 percent of the barangay’s total population.
Moderately-affected are those with two percent to 20 percent of the barangay’s total population considered as drug personalities, while slightly-affected are barangays with reported presence of drug personalities of less than two percent of the total population.
David Mark Maramba, operations division chief of PDEA-Negros Island Region, had earlier said the local officials and the police are responsible in maintaining the barangays’ drug-free status. (PNA)
