ILOILO – The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) has an appeal to youth gangs: Enjoy Dinagyang but refrain from making trouble.
Securing the city from troublemakers this Saturday (Kasadyahan contest) and Sunday (ati-ati tribes competition) are a total of 3,606 police officers, revealed Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso, city police director.
Gang-related violence has been bugging the city in recent months. The ICPO said most gang members were minors.
Two gangs have so far given their commitment not to create trouble, said Canieso.
ICPO counted 28 youth gangs and leaders of two of these recently sought a meeting with Canieso. “See Crazy Kids Toughies Nice Girls” (Shoktong) and “D Ilonggos Crew Thugs Amegos” (Dicta) vowed to help the police maintain peace and order and even hold community service.
Canieso said policemen fear gang violence could erupt during the Dinagyang festivities.
“Have pity on yourselves. You might later on regret the troubles you’ve caused. Just enjoy the Dinagyang peacefully,” said the city police director.
Among others, policemen will secure the five judging areas of the Dinagyang tribes and areas where festival revelers usually converge – the San Jose Parish Church, Plazoleta Gay intersection, Atria, SM City Iloilo, and Iloilo Business Park.
The five judging areas are the Freedom Grandstand, Iloilo provincial capitol, Mabini Street, Quezon-Ledesma streets, and Maria Clara area.
The gangs that the ICPO identified were spread out in five districts – City Proper, La Paz and Lapuz, Mandurriao, Molo. Councilor Jeffrey Ganzon said he wanted to have a meeting with the leaders of the gangs, too, and make a personal appeal to them for sobriety.
The chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s committee on police matters asked the ICPO for a list of the gangs and the addresses of their leaders.
“I want to meet the presidents of these gangs to personally talk to them. I believe this move will somehow help solve the gang problem,” Ganzon said.
Canieso said the ICPO has also tapped Reserved Officers Training Corps cadets of various schools, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, civilian volunteers such as the Guardians and Citizens Crime Watch.
Barangay tanods have been tapped as police force multipliers, too.
Deployment started last night – the start of the four-day Dinagyang food festival downtown.
