BACOLOD City – Four police officers were killed in an ambush allegedly staged by the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Mabato, Ayungon, Negros Oriental.
Corporal Relebert Beronio, Patrolman Raffy Callo, Patrolman Roel Cabellon, and Patrolman Marquino de Leon succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on the body, police said.
They were all members of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion in Region 7.
Police investigation revealed that around 2:30 p.m. on July 18, the four intelligence operatives were approaching the house of their “contact” on board two motorcycles to verify reports about the alleged presence of NPA in the area when they were ambushed by around 20 armed men.
The suspects reportedly took their firearms and motorcycles.
Police have yet to identify the suspects, who fled after the incident./PN
