KALIBO, Aklan – Four police Explosives and Ordnance Division (EOD) teams retrieved a 500-pound World War II vintage bomb found in Leon, Iloilo.
A 47-year-old unidentified village watchman discovered the explosive at a creek in Sitio Gamot, Barangay Cagay, Leon – 36 kilometers southwest of Iloilo City – on his way home from his farm.
Cagay barangay captain Teresita Calicaran reported the discovery to the Leon police station.
EOD teams from police offices in Aklan, Antique, Iloilo, and the Police Regional Office 6 were dispatched to the area.
The explosive, an M64 general-purpose bomb, has a blast radius of 100 to 150 meters, according to Senior Police Officer 4 Vengie Repedro of the Aklan Police Provincial Office EOD.
The area where the vintage bomb was found on Oct. 12 was a hospital during the Japanese Imperial Army occupation in the 1940s, police said.
The explosive was taken to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office for proper disposition.
Repedro urged Aklan locals to immediately report to the authorities if they unearth vintage bombs in their areas.
On Tuesday, an unidentified vintage explosive was also found in an elementary school in Janiuay, Iloilo. The bomb was turned over to the Iloilo police EOD. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
