ILOILO City – Five teenaged boys drowned yesterday in the coastal waters off Barangay Bacay, Dumangas, Iloilo.
They did not know how to swim, according to one of their rescued peers.
They were Ken Segura, 16, and Voltaire Jade Derutas, 16, both of Barangay Lacturan; Carlo Lopez, 17, and 15-year-old brother Stephen of Salas Street; and Roger Derutas, 15, of Barangay Victorias.
All of them were students of Dumangas National High School.
Rescuers managed to save their peers Francisco Roque and Jose Vincent Segura.
These boys went swimming in Bacay at around 10 a.m., said Chief Inspector Rene Obregon, municipal police head.
Police officers and rescuers from the local government unit responded when called for help.
Roque and Jose Vincent Segura were the only ones alive.
“We were too late,” said Obregon. “The body of Voltaire Jade (Derutas) was the last we retrieved at around 1 p.m.”
In a radio interview, Jose Vincent Segura said it was low tide when they first got to the coast.
They have been swimming for about an hour already when they noticed that the tide has started rising, he said.
Strong waves pushed them further away from the coast, said the boy.
All of his peers who drowned did not know how to swim, he added.
Dumangas mayor Ronaldo Golez was saddened by the tragedy.
He promised to extend financial assistance to the victims’ families./PN
