ILOILO City – Fifty convicts detained at various jails in Western Visayas were transferred to the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila where they would continue to serve their prison sentences.
These inmates were the second batch remitted to the national penitentiary this year, said Assistant Regional Director Gilbert Peremne of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
“Most of them were convicted for murder, robbery, rape, and violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002,” he added.
Of the 50 inmates, 13 were from the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo. They were convicted for murder, robbery, homicide, and rape.
A BJMP bus transported them to a roll-on, roll-off vessel accompanied by 15 jail guards on Thursday.
The first batch, also composed of some 50 inmates, was moved to the Bilibid just this May.
The New Bilibid Prison is the main insular penitentiary designed to house the prison population of the country. It is maintained by the Bureau of Corrections under the Department of Justice./PN
