MANILA – Seven Philippine Swimming League (PSL) members from Western Visayas were qualified for the 29th Summer World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan next year.
The seven — two each from Bacolod City and Aklan, and one each from Iloilo City, Negros Occidental and Capiz — were among the 87 swimmers that passed a recent qualifying tournament.
Joshua Junsay, a native of Silay City, Negros Occidental, is leading the way. He was a two-time NCAA MVP awardee under San Beda Red Lions, which recently captured its 14th straight championship.
Other qualifiers were Joshua Balinas and Jason Mirabueno of Bacolod City, Kobe Soguilon and Annyka Dela Cruz of Aklan, Maurize Dabi of Iloilo, and Alic dela Cruz from Capiz.
The PSL staged the tryouts in Iloilo, Aklan, Capiz, Bicol, Baguio, Mindoro, Davao, and National Capital Region.
“We had our tryouts since July 2015 to give chance to as many swimmers as we can,” said PSL president Susan Papa. “We ended in September and came out with 87 total swimmers. We hope to [have] the total of 105 swimmers.”
“We are delighted to come out with more swimmers now,” Papa said. “I guess more swimmers are realizing that [the Summer World University Games] is the second largest competition in the world next to Olympics.”
The swimmers already started their training to “at least [test] their full potential and beat their best times,” she said.
“It is not all about winning but [also about] experiencing the different cultures of [other] countries,” noted Papa./PN
