MANILA – Eight crew members of a fishing vessel were brutally killed by five armed men in an alleged pirate attack on Monday night in Zamboanga City, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Tuesday.
PCG spokesperson Armand Balilo told Panay News that, based on reports from Coast Guard Station (CGS) – Zamboanga, the attack incident occurred at around 8 p.m. on Monday at Siromon Island in Zamboanga City.
“At around 8 p.m. on Monday, the M/B Hulbot Hulbot was strafed by five armed men in waters off the vicinity of Siromon Island, Eleven Island Group in Zamboanga City,” Balilo said.
Balilo added that eight of the crew members of the fishing vessel were tied and killed on the spot. Two members of the vessel, namely Norman Sakandal and Ervin Banaan, as well as five other fishermen have already been recovered.
Sakandal and Banahan related to CGS-Zamboanga that they managed to escape the pirate attack by jumping into the ocean.
According to CGS-Zamboanga, the group of armed men that attacked the fishing vessel may be part of the group that preys and extracts extortion money from local fishermen in the area./PN
