ILOILO City – Nine persons got shot at the fishing port complex in Barangay Tanza Baybay here on Tuesday night. They were taken to the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital.
According to Police Major Francisco Paguia of Police Station 1, the shooting occurred at around 8:30 p.m.
The complex’s two security guards reprimanded the nine persons for selling fish at the facility.
There was resistance from the nine, forcing the security guards to fire warning shots, said Paguia.
The nine persons were Barangay Tanza Bonifacio residents Welix Asong, 44; Ronnie Genoveña, 46; and Crismund dela Torre, 22; Barangay Rizal Pala-Pala resident Jonas Dalagon, 19; Barangay Tanza Baybay residents Edran Locsin, 20; Vincent Barrios, 36; and Joebert Gabion, 31; Hermie Carboledo, 21, of Barangay Jayobo, Lambunao, Iloilo; and a minor.
Selling of fish at the complex is currently prohibited, security guards Romel Perez, 33, of Barangay Agmanaphaw, Mina, Iloilo and Teody Alvarez, 29, of Dumalag, Capiz, told the nine persons, because such would make social distancing impossible.
The nine, however, did not listen.
When the security guards tried to confiscate the fishes, the nine persons resisted. They pelted the guards with ice cubes.
The guards fired warning shots but not in the air; they fired on the concreted ground.
The bullets ricocheted and nine got wounded in the process.
Perez and Alvarez were detained at Police Station 1. They surrendered their service firearms, a .45 pistol and a 12-gauge shot gun./PN
