AROUND 900 athletes from seven districts of Iloilo City will compete in the Philippine Sports Commission’s Children’s Games (Sports for Peace) from Feb. 10 to 11 at the La Paz district plaza.
Moises Salomon of the Iloilo City Sports Development Division said the event, designed for children 9 to 12 years old, is a powerful tool for character-building and values formation.
“The Iloilo City government supports this event because it believes that molding the character of children through sports is important in nation-building and that it is essential to give children an avenue to participate and enjoy,” Salomon said.
Sports to be played are basketball, volleyball, chess, athletics, arnis, badminton, karatedo, and taekwondo.
Also included are 10 parlor games: Mamita Went to Town, tumbang preso, luksong lubid, sipang bilangan, karerang takbo, karerang talon, hula hoop, and suot lusot.
“The PSC included parlor games because they believe reconnecting children to cultural education is essential in engaging them in sports,” Salomon said.
“The children will get to choose the games they want,” he added. “They will have free meals, transportation and T-shirts, all sponsored by the PSC.”
The Children’s Games is a pet project of PSC chairman William Ramirez since his first term in 2008./PN
