SAN JOSE, Antique – A government commission sought help from state information officers and the press in spreading awareness on the Employees’ Compensation Program (ECP).
The ECP is a government program designed to provide compensation package to public and private employees or their dependents whenever there is work-related sickness, injury or death.
It may be availed through the Social Security System (SSS) or the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), according to the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC), a group under the Department of Labor and Employment.
Not many in Antique are aware of the ECP. Most of those who avail themselves of EC claims are seafarers, according to ECC regional-in-charge Stephene S. Barredo.
EC contributions are already part of what the employers pay for their workers’ monthly remittance to the SSS or the GSIS. This means members may apply for EC claims aside from their SSS or GSIS claims.
“Not many know that whenever they go to the SSS or the GSIS for their claims, they should also ask for their EC claim,” Barredo said.
He said EC claim forms are available at the SSS, the GSIS or the ECC website.
The ECC has classified 32 sicknesses as “work-related,” including pneumonia, tuberculosis and bronchial asthma.
Work-related injuries — those resulting from an accident that happened at the workplace or while an employee is performing their official function — are also compensated.
The ECC also offers rehabilitation services and skills training for the reemployment of workers who incurred physical disabilities and assists them in setting up their own livelihood. (PNA)
