The Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) boy’s basketball team is more than prepared as its campaign in the 60th Palarong Pambansa begins today at the Evelio D. Javier Sports Complex.
WVRAA head coach Rodel Camacho said they are optimistic of their chances in the event despite an expected huge challenge, especially from the title-favorite National Capital Region (NCR).
“We have prepared hard for the Palaro. And I believe that, as long as we play as one, we are positive that we will have a fighting chance in this tournament,” Camacho told Panay News on Sunday.
“We know that most of our opponents are tough, especially the National Capital Region, but we will never give up. I told my players to continue to fight until the last second of the game,” he added.
To prepare for the Palarong Pambansa, Camacho has tapped nine players from his team Sta. Clarita International School and one each from Central Philippine University in Iloilo, Colegio de la Purisima Concepción in Capiz and Iloilo National High School.
Camacho said he is counting on the contributions of Ryan Calama-an, who is set to move to the De La Salle Greenhills in the NCAA, Ralph Bajon, Giann Paul Nahine, Marvin Cuerbo and King James Gaborno.
Also in the WVRAA men’s basketball team are RG Pulikall, Dave Lautizo, Ron Rei Tolentino, Earl Mabaquiao, Bryan John Sajonia, Robert Begafria, and Wilmer Dalumpines.
“We are extra determined since it is to be held here in Western Visayas. Of course, we want to put our best performance here in front of our fellow Ilonggos. Their cheers will surely inspire our players to give their best,” Camacho said.
The WVRAA will open its campaign against Region 10 (Davao Region) at 4 p.m. today, Region 2 (Cagayan Valley) at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and against Region 3 (Central Luzon) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday./PN
