MANILA – The San Miguel Beermen continued to roll in the 2017 Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup with a 111-98 victory over Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Saturday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Reinforcement Charles Rhodes bucked early foul trouble to finish with 26 points for the Beermen, which kept its hold on the top spot in the standings with an unblemished 5-0 win-loss slate.
Gabby Espinas added 15 markers, while Alex Cabagnot and June Mar Fajardo contributed 14 points apiece for the Beermen, which is aiming for its second straight PBA title.
“Yeah, 5-0, but actually it’s not that easy to get this win, especially against Rain or Shine,” said Beermen head coach Leo Austria. “Hopefully we can sustain our strong start this conference.”
Meanwhile, GlobalPort Batang Pier (2-5) quickly bounced back from its lopsided 109-88 defeat at the hands of the TNT Katropa two nights ago by dominating the slumping Mahindra Floodbuster (1-7).
From a tight opening quarter, the Beermen started to pull away in the second frame behind its local crew, led by Arwind Santos and Cabagnot, to build a 57-44 lead at halftime.
The Beermen continued to pounce on the Painters in the second half as it led, 55-40, on hits by Santos and Espinas. The Painters rallied to within 85-75 in the fourth quarter but the Beermen leaned on conversions by Rhodes to build its largest lead at 95-75.
Import Shawn Taggart finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Negrense Jeffrei Chan and Maverick Ahanmisi had 16 points each for the Painters, which slid down to the 4-3 mark./PN
