BACOLOD City – “Green corridors” planted to endemic tree species will be created in this capital city soon.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regional office and the city government have partnered for an urban greening program.
The program was set to be launched in May but the final schedule has yet to be set.
DENR-Negros director Al Orolfo said the program will last three years.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod has authorized Mayor Evelio Leonardia to enter into an agreement with the DENR, Orolfo said.
He stressed that the project aims to make Bacolod not only a “green” city but also a biodiversity-friendly metropolis.
Meanwhile Leonardia said the city government, with the help of barangay officials, aims to plant a million trees through the program.
He said the initiative is seen to raise environmental awareness and consciousness and love for trees among Bacolodnons.
Leonardia urged the private sector to participate. He specifically encouraged homeowners with vacant lots to plant trees.
In June last year the DENR-Negros offered to provide free seedlings to every barangay in Negros Occidental.
The agency maintains an P80-million mechanized nursery project in Ayungon, Negros Oriental, one of the 11 mechanized nursery projects in the Philippines and among the first five sites opened.
The nursery, which also serves three other Visayas regions, can produce up to 250,000 seedlings a day. (PNA)
