BACOLOD City – A 68-year-old woman from Sibulan, Negros Oriental lost around P152,000 worth of cash and personal effects to swindlers.
Leticia Villafuerte was in Barangay Calindagan, Dumaguete City on Wednesday when she was duped into giving her possessions to at least three suspects, police said.
Villafuerte told the Sibulan police she was with her minor grandchild at a public market when two women asked her about the location of a hardware store. They told her they wanted to buy some materials for a construction project in Dauin town.
Another woman offered them a ride. A car driven by a man took them to the hardware store.
The two women with Villafuerte put in the latter’s bag a pouch containing what they claimed to be a bundle of cash for the payment of the items they will supposedly buy, police said.
They took Villafuerte’s belongings as “collateral”: three bracelets, two necklaces worth P100,000, a Fossil watch worth P10,000, and P42,000 cash.
Upon their arrival at Citi Hardware, the driver went inside and, after a while, went back along with another woman, who claimed to be a store staffer and told them the establishment was not accepting huge cash.
After which, the women sent them to Rizal Boulevard, Dumaguete City. Villafuerte went to a restaurant to order food but when she was about to pay, she discovered that the content of the pouch was a bundle of paper.
The suspects have escaped. Police have yet to identify and catch them as of this writing./PN
